Greda House
Velebit

Where stone remembers and wood keeps you warm

On the road to Velebit, in the village of Lički Novi near Gospić, stands a house almost a century old. Greda House is not just a holiday rental but a home that still carries the lives of those who built it. Restored with patience and love, it offers something increasingly rare: peace, silence and the gentle rhythm of village life.

Our Story

A House Built of Beams
and Patience

The name Greda is no coincidence. Greda means beam, and this old Lika house is quite literally built of them: oak beams form its base, while fir beams carry the upper floor. The ground floor is enclosed by stone walls and the upper floor by solid timber logs, just as houses were built in Lika when they were meant to last. Each of these beams is a quiet witness to a family story.

1932 · The Beginning

The Roots: Stone, Distance and Loyalty

Almost a hundred years ago, in 1932, Marta and Joso (Joseph) Šaban began building this house in the historic village of Lički Novi. Theirs was a love tested by an ocean. Driven by the waves of emigration of the era, Joso left to work in the distant mines of Canada—travelling through the United States—and sent home what he earned, so that every stone and every timber could be bought. Meanwhile, in the rugged beauty of Lika, Marta raised their children on her own, oversaw the construction, and watched the house grow day by day. Together, they requested and secured the plot for the house from the local Asić family cooperative (zadruga), of which they were members. Joso never came back to live in it, but his strength remains built into every stone.

Restoration · Today

The Present: Hands That Brought the Wood Back to Life

For years the house stood in silence, as if waiting for someone to hear it again. Today it is home to Anita and Josip (Joseph). Skilled in working with wood, Josip restored the old beams with his own hands, one by one, until the house could breathe again. Anita took up the care of the house, just as Marta did in the first half of the twentieth century. Now, in the first half of the twenty-first, it is her turn.

And so the strength of the first Joso, who dreamed of this house from across the ocean, now meets the hands of Josip, who brought it back to life. The house joins them like a bridge between past and present.

The House

An Old Lika House,
with a New Breath

Greda House keeps the best of traditional Lika building: noble materials, simplicity and the warmth of a real home.

The Stone That Endures

The stone walls of the ground floor, raised according to Marta's vision and lovingly preserved, keep the rooms pleasantly cool in summer.

The Wood That Warms

The oak and fir beams and the timber logs of the upper floor, hand-restored by Josip, give the house the scent and character of an old Lika home.

Two Floors, Two Seasons

True to the traditional Lika house, Greda has no inner staircase: the ground floor and the upper floor are linked by an outdoor stairway. Life once moved with the seasons, with summers spent downstairs among the stone and winters upstairs within the wood.

Activities · Exploring Lika

10 Days Beneath Velebit

Your personal itinerary for discovering the untouched wilderness, rich traditions, and hidden gems of Lika from Greda House.

Welcome to your guide for discovering Lika in a way that is truly unique, personal, and unforgettable. You can discover Lika through nature, food, history, or adventure. We have put together ten suggested trips that you can choose and combine to suit your interests, time, and mood. Some are designed as half-day outings, while others take a full day. You can also pick individual activities and create your own itinerary. Velebit connects much of what is on offer, from Lika's villages and mountain trails to its underground world and coastline.

Along the way, look out for signs to family farms (known locally as OPGs), dairies, tasting rooms, and rural visitor venues, as well as the brown tourist signs pointing to attractions. In the villages, it is worth stopping to meet the local producers behind the flavors of Lika (we recommend arranging farm visits, tastings, and meals in advance). The suggestions begin with Day 0 at the house and an optional adventure day, followed by ten trips arranged from the local area towards more distant destinations.

Set aside a full day to connect with the essence of Greda and Lički Novi. No rush. Just breakfast on the terrace, open fields, and mountain calm.
